Everything About CBD Oil & Addictive Behaviors
Combating addiction is never an easy task. While there are a variety of ways to find help, there isn’t a simple cure-all that can relieve the symptoms of substance abuse entirely. It’s something that takes considerable effort to overcome, even with the best assistance one can get. Even so, the right kind of help can make all the difference between successfully overcoming addiction and falling short. When discussing the merits of CBD, this is an important principle to keep in mind. It may not be an absolute cure, but there is growing evidence that it may provide significant help for people struggling with addictive behaviors.
The Science on CBD & Addiction
Research about CBD, cannabinoids, and the endocannabinoid system, in general, continues to teach us more we never understood. That being said, there is still a lot left to discover. At present, there are positive signs that CBD can be used to treat a variety of debilitating illnesses, addiction included. However, the science is still in the preliminary stages. As we continue to learn more about this incredible compound, we may come to find better ways of using it to our benefit.
Treating Addictive Behaviors
As it relates to addiction, there have been a handful of studies showing that CBD can provide some help. One study involved 42 people with a heroin dependency abstaining from the substance in an attempt to break their addiction. Some were given a placebo, others 400 milligrams of CBD, and others 800 milligrams. These doses were given at differing intervals in order for researchers to observe the span of their effects. Images designed to induce cravings were shown to the participants, and those who took CBD reported less craving and anxiety.
Interestingly, saliva tests showed that these individuals had lower levels of stress hormones and lower heart rates than those who took the placebo. Several more studies have been done exploring the ways CBD might help people trying to overcome substance abuse. The consensus seems to be that it’s most useful for relieving stress and anxiety. On one hand, research indicates that this alone can make a significant difference in overcoming addiction. On the other hand, other studies have pointed out that CBD alone may not be enough. Additional therapy and other forms of support may be necessary for most people to overcome their dependency, even though CBD might still help them in the short-term.
Preventing Addictive Behaviors
While research continues, studies in utilizing CBD as a way of keeping people away from addictive substances. In light of the opioid epidemic, there’s been growing interest in alternative methods to relieve pain. The idea is to prevent addiction by never giving them opioids in the first place. Unfortunately, there aren’t many natural pain killers that are nearly as effective, but researchers think CBD may provide some help in that regard.
The capacity of CBD to relieve pain, seizures, and anxiety has been well documented. In addition, there are studies which show opioid dependency is less prevalent in states that allow marijuana use. It seems that when there are viable alternatives available, people are less likely to turn to opioids. Using CBD to treat pain is still being studied by the medical community. While there has been evidence to suggest it’s useful for helping with arthritis and other forms of joint or nerve pain, its overall effectiveness is still questionable from a scientific standpoint. It would take significant evidence for CBD to be recognized as a legitimate treatment, but as research continues, there’s hope that it might make a difference to those in pain and prevent further substance abuse as a result.
