Stop Worrying About THC
Although there are currently more than 100 cannabinoids identified in the Cannabis sativa plant, the two principal compounds are Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). They each interact with the cannabinoid receptors found in the endocannabinoid system in the brain and body, but they have very different effects.
The endocannabinoid system is responsible for signaling the body to let it know that certain functions need to be regulated. Those functions include mood, pain, appetite, sleep, memory, and immune response.
Difference Between THC and CBD
Psychoactive Properties
The main difference between THC and CBD is that CBD is non-psychoactive. That means it doesn’t get the user high, which is why CBD is included in dietary and natural supplements more often than THC.
When people think of THC, they connect it with marijuana. It is, in fact, an agonist of the cannabinoid 1 receptors (CB1) that are found in the central nervous system and brain. What that means is that this THC substance causes a physiological response when it’s combined with the receptors.
By contrast, CBD inhibits the CB1-activating responses. That means that CBD is an antagonist of CB1 agonists, which simply equates to the fact that CBD does not cause a high.
Marijuana vs. Hemp
THC dominates the chemical makeup of the marijuana plant, also known as weed. On the other hand, CBD is the main cannabinoid found in the hemp plant.
Legal Status
Whether or not a cannabinoid product is legal in the United States depends on its source and THC content.
United States federal law lists marijuana and higher levels of THC as a controlled substance, so they are prohibited. There are a growing number of states, however, that allow both the medical use of high concentrations of THC so long as it is recommended by a licensed physician. A smaller sector of states allow both the medical and recreational use of THC and marijuana.
So long as CBD is obtained from a high-CBD hemp plant, and it does not contain more than 0.3% THC, it is legal in the United States. When taken from the hemp plant, CBD is regarded as a dietary supplement.
CBD can also be derived from marijuana, but if it is, it must be purchased from a state-regulated medical marijuana program to be considered legal.
Atomic Arrangement
Even though CBD and THC share the same chemical composition, their atoms are arranged differently. This difference affects how the two cannabinoids relate to the endocannabinoid system’s receptors.
THC
The primary psychoactive element in the cannabis plant is THC. That’s what makes it such a popular choice for recreational use.
THC also has positive medical benefits. It works by imitating the effects of two neurotransmitters, 2-AG and anandamide, that the human body naturally produces. They assist in regulating certain functions, such as pain perception and eating and sleeping habits.
The Natural Benefits of THC
Research has shown that THC may be beneficial in diminishing chronic pain and inflammation as well as the side effects of chemotherapy. It may also positively impact the muscle spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis (MS).
CBD
CBD is found in both medical cannabis and agricultural hemp. Because CBD lacks a euphoric effect, people may experience relief to their ailments and discomfort without losing their cognitive abilities.
The Medical Benefits of CBD
Studies are ongoing, but research indicates that CBD may help with alleviating pain and inflammation as well as aiding other chronic conditions associated with disorders that range from epilepsy, ADHD, anxiety, heart disease, and depression.
Skin conditions, such as acne and psoriasis as well as bacterial infections have exhibited positive results associated with CBD.
Parkinson’s, MS, and schizophrenia might also realize diminished symptoms through the use of CBD.
How Each Eases Pain
Studies indicate that THC could be better at remedying cramp-related pain and spasticity; however, CBD might be the better choice for treating neuropathic pain and inflammation.
Some people have difficulty in managing the psychoactive effects of THC, which could negatively impact their benefits. As a result, lower doses of THC are often recommended.
The Entourage Effect
The entourage effect is a whole plant approach to managing pain and other unwelcome symptoms. That means that all of the compounds found within the cannabis plant work together to create a specific effect on the body. CBD then counterbalances what some consider the negative psychoactive effects of THC.
Why CBD Is Used in Natural Supplements
The side effects associated with THC, such as impaired reasoning and thinking, as well as limited impulse control lend themselves to its standing as an illegal substance.
Because CBD offers similar benefits as THC but without the other effects, it’s considered an effective natural remedy for some ailments.
